Meaning · English
When she opens, the power that moves as breath neither goes out nor comes in. Free of thought-constructs, she stands in the middle. Through her, the state of Bhairava is reached.
Three words carry it. Shakti is the living power in you; here she takes the form of marut, the moving breath. Nirvikalpa means without vikalpa, the mind's habit of cutting experience into this and that, in and out, me and it. Madhya is the middle, the place between the two movements. Bhairavata is the state of Bhairava itself. Now the clauses. When the breath-power is opened, it no longer travels outward or inward. It is not stopped by force; it simply is not heading anywhere. Because thought is not dividing the moment, the power stays in the middle, and the middle is where the two directions meet. Through that, the state of Bhairava is there. The doorway is an ordinary one. Every breath already has a middle where going out becomes coming in. Usually thought covers it, so it passes unseen. The text's logic is that nothing needs adding. When the breath is met without sorting it into out and in, the moment opens from inside, and what was always there as the middle shows itself as the state being sought.
1. Sit or stand with the spine easy and the eyes soft. Let the breath move on its own. 2. Notice the breath going out and the breath coming in. Do not change either one. 3. Let attention rest where one movement turns into the other. Do not hunt for a point; let the whole turning be the place. 4. When a thought arrives, or a picture of the middle, let it pass and come back to the turning. 5. If you catch yourself holding or steering the breath, release it and let it go back to its own pace. 6. Stop when the sitting feels finished, and sit a moment before moving.
The tradition's account: the mind moves because the breath-power moves, outward and inward, and thought rides on that motion. When the power is opened and stops heading in either direction, the mind's movement stops with it. The support drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself. That is what the text calls the state of Bhairava. What a sitter tends to notice: at first the breath is still sorted into two, and the attention jumps between them. The middle seems to be a gap that is missed again and again. Often the mind starts making a picture of the middle, and that picture is only another thought. A small sign it is working is that the breath feels less like something being done and more like something happening, with the edges between in and out going soft. Usual mistakes are holding the breath to make a pause, straining to catch the exact point, and congratulating oneself when it seems found. Any of these puts direction back into the breath.
