Stillness at breath's end

Vijnana Bhairava 27

Meaning · English

Whether the breath is held, let out, or drawn in, at the end of it there is a stillness, called the quiet one. By its own power, the quiet one shines forth.

Three words carry the verse. Kumbhita is breath held, like a pot that is full and does not move. Recita is breath let out. Purita is breath drawn in. Between them they cover every state the breath can be in. Shanta means quiet, settled, at rest. The verse uses it as a name for what is found at the end of the breath. Shakti is power. Here it is the power of awareness to know itself, so the quiet one shines by its own power and needs nothing else to light it. The plain sense, clause by clause: the breath may be held, emptied or filled. When any of the three finishes, there is a stillness. That stillness has a name, the quiet one. It shines by awareness's own power. Nothing has to be made or brought in. This works as a doorway because the breath is the most ordinary thing there is, and every cycle already holds three such endings. The stillness is not somewhere else. It is the moment you already pass through, opened from inside.

1. Sit where you will not be disturbed, with your spine upright and your belly loose. 2. Let the breath move on its own. Do not change its length or depth. 3. Watch for the place where a breath ends: after the in-breath, after the out-breath, or in a hold that happens by itself. 4. Rest your attention in that stillness for as long as it lasts. Do not extend it. 5. When the mind wanders, notice the next ending and return there. 6. Stop when the sit feels finished, and sit a moment longer before you move.

The tradition's account: the mind moves when the breath moves. At the end of the breath the movement stops, the mind loses its support, and awareness is left knowing itself. The text calls this the quiet one shining by its own power. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. The gap is short, and attention usually jumps ahead to the next breath before the gap is felt. Many people start holding the breath on purpose. The throat and belly then tighten, and that is a push, not a stop. When it goes right, the ribs and belly are soft, the shoulders and jaw let go, and the gap seems a little wider each time. Attention rests without an object. Common ways it goes wrong are trying to grab the stillness as a thing, counting, forcing the pause, or judging whether the gap was good enough.
