A ray thinning away

Vijnana Bhairava 28

Meaning · English

From the root, shining like a ray of light, finer than fine and subtler still: hold her in mind until she fades at the twelve's far edge. There Bhairava rises.

Take three words apart. Mula is the root, the base or starting point, and the verse begins there. Sukshma means fine or subtle. The verse says it twice, finer than fine and then finer again, so the attention keeps narrowing. Bhairava is the name for the awakened state itself, the one Bhairavi asked about, and udaya is its rising, like a sunrise. The plain sense runs clause by clause. Start at the root and find a presence that looks like a ray of light. Think of it, and let it grow finer with each step upward until it is hardly anything. Follow it to the far limit of the twelve, which the verse counts without saying what is counted. There it fades into quiet. At that fading, Bhairava rises. Nothing is added at the end. The doorway works because the thing you follow is ordinary, the faint thread of awareness already running through every moment. Followed closely enough, it thins until nothing is left to follow, and the one who was following is what remains. The text offers the state as what is left when the support falls away.

1. Sit comfortably and let your body settle. 2. Bring to mind a thin ray of light rising from the root, from the lowest place you can sense. 3. Think of it as finer than fine. Each time you hold it, let it grow finer still. 4. Follow it upward without pushing, to the far edge where it fades. 5. When it fades, stay with the quiet and do not reach for it again. 6. When the mind wanders, come back to the root and start the ray again. Stop when the sit feels complete.

The tradition's account: the shakti is a single ray rising from the root. Attending to it makes the mind subtle, and when the ray fades, the mind's movement fades with it. Nothing is left to hold onto, and awareness is left knowing itself. That is what the text calls Bhairava rising. What a sitter tends to notice is more modest. At first the ray is hard to find, and the mind makes up pictures, which are thicker than anything the verse describes. Attention tends to grip, and gripping keeps the ray coarse. The small sign of progress is that the object gets quieter and the effort behind it eases. Sometimes there is a gap where the ray has gone and no new thought has started. The usual errors are forcing a bright image, hurrying toward the fading, and treating the fading as a failure to keep hold.
