Lightning climbing the wheels

Vijnana Bhairava 29

Meaning · English

Rising like lightning, wheel after wheel, step after step, upward as far as three fists' length. At that limit, the great rising comes.

Three phrases carry it. Taditrupa means lightning-formed: a quick, bright, narrow line, gone almost as soon as it shows. Praticakra means at each wheel, so the line does not shoot up in one stroke. It stops at every circle on the way and passes through it. Muṣṭitraya means three fists, a length measured on your own body, so the climb is a small, bounded distance and not an endless one. Mahodaya means great rising, the arrival the line is heading for. The clauses run in order. Something lightning-like rises. It goes wheel by wheel and step by step, each stage taken fully before the next. It goes upward, as far as three fists. At the far end of that distance the great rising happens. Bhairava offers this as a doorway because it uses only what is already present: a sense of upward movement you can picture and follow. Attention that follows a slow, stepwise rising has nothing left over to wander with, and the text says the opening comes at the finish of the climb, not before it.

1. Sit with your back upright and your eyes soft or closed. 2. Picture a thin line of light, quick like lightning, beginning to rise. 3. Let it pass one wheel at a time. Stay with each step until it is complete, then move to the next. 4. Keep it going upward only as far as three fists, measured on your own body. 5. When you lose it, start the rising again from the beginning, without scolding yourself. 6. At the limit of the climb, stop following and rest there until you are ready to finish.

The tradition's account: the mind moves because it keeps grabbing at one object after another. Give it a single line to follow, rising in stages, and the grabbing is gathered into one thread. When the thread reaches its limit, there is nothing further to hold, the support drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself. The text calls that the great rising. What a sitter tends to notice: the picture is hard to keep. The line either races to the top or fades at the first wheel. Going slowly and counting each stage as a separate step helps. The mind drifts, usually into thinking about the picture instead of following it. A small sign it is working is that the following becomes quiet and the effort to hold the image eases. The usual mistakes are forcing the image with the face and shoulders, and waiting at the top for something to happen. The text asks only for the climb, taken to its limit.
