Twelve steps of letting go

Vijnana Bhairava 30

Meaning · English

The twelve, taken in their order, each one divided by twelve syllables. Through the gross, the subtle and the supreme state, let go, and let go again. At the very end, there is Shiva.

Three words carry the verse. Krama is sequence, one step after another with nothing skipped. Akshara means a syllable, a letter, and also what does not perish. Muktva means having released, and it is said twice. The verse does not list the twelve. Read next to verses 28 and 29, they are the twelve stages of the rising line, and each stage is cut into twelve syllables. The verse says you go through them in order. At each one you meet three levels: sthula, the gross; sukshma, the subtle; para, the supreme, which is what lies beyond both. At every level you release what you have found, and you release it again at the next. Nothing is kept as a prize to stand on. The last clause is plain: at the end there is Shiva. This works as a doorway because the practice asks for no special moment. It takes whatever is already rising in you and opens it from inside, one rung at a time. Each rung is dropped as soon as it is known, so the only thing left when the steps run out is the ground they stood on.

1. Sit upright and let the body settle. Call to mind the thin line of light rising that verses 28 and 29 describe. 2. Follow it one step at a time, in order. Skip none and do not run ahead. 3. At each step, notice it first as something coarse, then as something finer, then as what is past both. 4. Release the step before you move on. Open the hand and let it go. 5. When the mind wanders, return to the step you were on, not the first one. 6. When the steps run out, stop climbing and stay where you are for a few breaths.

The tradition's account is that every stage is a support for the mind. The mind moves from the coarse form to the fine one, and from the fine one to what is past form. When each support is let go, the movement of the mind has nothing left to hold, and awareness is left knowing itself. That is the text's teaching, said in its own terms. A sitter usually notices something more modest. The first difficulty is keeping the order. The mind jumps ahead, or lingers on a stage it likes. The second is mistaking the letting go for pushing away. Pushing leaves a small tension, a clenched jaw or a held breath. Real release feels more like opening a hand. Small signs it is working are a pause between steps that gets quieter, and a sense that each stage matters less once it is known. It goes wrong when the count becomes the work and the releasing is forgotten.
