Crossing at the brow

Vijnana Bhairava 31

Meaning · English

Fill the body quickly with that rising, up to the end of the head. Break through, crossing by the bridge of the brow's lifting. Make the mind free of constructs. Above everything, the all-going rising comes.

Three words carry it. Mūrdhānta is the end of the head, the crown, where the rising stops. Bhrūkṣepa-setu is the bridge made by the throwing or lifting of the brows; the point between them is the crossing. Nirvikalpa means without vikalpa, the mental constructs that cut experience into this and that, so a mind free of constructs is not blank but not building. Now the clauses. The rising named in the previous verses is filled in quickly until it reaches the crown. Then it is broken through, and the brow's lifting is the bridge it crosses by. With that, the mind stops constructing. Last, above all of it, there is the rising of the all-going: what moves everywhere and is not held in any one place. The logic is that the ordinary moment already holds a rising and a gathering of attention at the brow. Nothing foreign is brought in. The doorway is that movement followed to its end, where the mind has nothing left to hold and what remains is not located anywhere.

1. Sit upright with the head level and the eyes soft or closed. 2. Gather the rising quickly and let it fill the body up to the crown of the head. 3. Let the brows lift slightly, and cross over at the point between them as if over a bridge. 4. Drop the picture and the story. Let the mind stop building anything. 5. When thoughts return, notice them, lift the brows again, and cross once more. 6. Stop when the crossing is gone or the effort turns to strain, and sit a moment without doing anything.

The tradition's account: the mind moves only while it has a support to move on. The rising is carried up through the body until it meets the crown, and the brow is the bridge where it passes over. When the support falls away, the mind's movement stops, and awareness is left knowing itself, not located in any place. That is what the all-going rising names. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. At first the attention keeps sliding off the path, down into thoughts about the body. The brow tightens, the forehead frowns, and the effort itself becomes the object. Small signs it is working are a softer forehead, a sense of attention gathered along the head, and a short gap where no thought is being built. The usual errors are forcing the brow, picturing the path instead of following it, and mistaking a dull blank for the mind free of constructs. A real gap is clear, not sleepy.
