Ushasti and the Leftover Beans

Chandogya Upanishad 1.10

The story · English

Hailstorms had struck the land of the Kurus. In a village owned by a rich man lived a very poor man, Ushasti Cakrayana, with his wife Atiki. One day Ushasti found the rich man eating beans and asked him for some. "I have nothing except what's in front of me," the rich man said. "Then give me some of those." So the rich man handed him beans from his own plate, and then held out his cup. "Here, have a drink as well." Ushasti would not take it. "That would be drinking your leftovers." The rich man looked at him. "Aren't the beans leftovers too?" "They are," said Ushasti. "But I couldn't stay alive if I didn't eat them. Water I can drink whenever I choose."

Ushasti ate, and some beans were still left over. He did not throw them away. He carried them home to Atiki. She had already begged enough food for herself that day, so she took the beans and put them aside. The next morning Ushasti got up and said, "If only we had something to eat, I might go and earn a little money. The king over there is having a sacrifice performed. He might choose me to carry out all the priestly duties." Atiki said, "Here, my lord, are the beans." They were the same beans the rich man had given him the day before. Ushasti ate them and set off for the king's sacrifice. By the time he got there, the sacrifice had already begun without him.

He went straight to the place where the hymns were sung. The Udgatri priests were just about to begin the Stotra, the hymn of praise. Ushasti went up to the Prastotri priest first. "Prastotri priest, if you sing the Prastava, the opening praise, without knowing the divinity connected with it, your head will fall off." Then he turned to the Udgatri priest. "Udgatri priest, if you chant the Udgitha, the loud chant, without knowing the divinity connected with it, your head will fall off." Then he spoke to the Pratihartri priest. "Pratihartri priest, if you take up the Pratihara, the response, without knowing the divinity connected with it, your head will fall off." Not one of them argued. All three stopped where they were, and quietly sat down.

The king who had arranged the sacrifice turned to the stranger. "Sir, I'd like to know who you are." "I am Ushasti Cakrayana." "I have been searching everywhere for you, for all these priestly duties," the king said. "When I couldn't find you, I chose others. But please, you take them all on for me." "Very well," said Ushasti. "But let these same priests sing the hymn, now that I allow it. Only give me as much as you give them." The king agreed. Then the Prastotri priest came to him. "You told me my head would fall off if I sang the Prastava without knowing its divinity. Which divinity is it?" "Breath," said Ushasti. "Every being comes into life with breath and leaves it with breath. Had you sung without knowing that, after my warning, your head would have fallen."

Next the Udgatri priest came to him. "You told me my head would fall off if I chanted the Udgitha without knowing its divinity. Which divinity is it?" "The sun," said Ushasti. "Every being here sings of the sun when he has risen. That is the divinity of the Udgitha. Had you chanted without knowing it, after I had told you, your head would have fallen." Last came the Pratihartri priest. "You told me my head would fall off if I took up the Pratihara without knowing its divinity. Which divinity is it?" Ushasti, who had come to the sacrifice on a stomach of leftover beans, answered him. "Food," he said. "Every being here lives by taking food into itself. That is the divinity of the Pratihara. Had you taken it up without knowing that, after I had told you, your head would have fallen."
