The Self Is Awareness

Shiva Sutras 1.1

Meaning · English

Consciousness is the self. The self is consciousness, nothing else and nothing less.

Two words open the whole book. Caitanya comes from cit, to be aware. It means awareness itself, the plain fact of knowing that anything is there. Atma is the self, the one each person means by "I". The sutra sets them side by side: the self is awareness. In the joined Sanskrit the word for "alone" can also be heard inside it, so the sense is awareness only. The Vartika spells out what is ruled out: not the body, not the breath, not the mind, not an empty void. These are things that appear to the self. They are not the self. Nothing precedes this sutra, so it rests on nothing earlier. It is the ground, stated first, before bondage is even mentioned. It belongs to the shambhava way, the way of Shiva, where no practice or ladder is given. The teaching is simply pointed at, to be recognised at once. Shiva is the name the tradition gives to this awareness when it is free to know and to act. Kshemaraja, in his Vimarshini, takes the self to be this awareness, free and creative by nature, and not a mere witness. Bhaskara's Vartika adds that, since the whole world is then awareness, a doubt arises about how bondage can exist at all. He says the sutra can be divided in two ways to answer that doubt.

A bangle, a ring and a chain lie on a jeweller's cloth. They have different shapes and different names. Ask what each one is made of and the answer is the same every time: gold. The self, in this teaching, is the gold. Body, breath and mind are the shapes it takes.

1. Once today, when you are sitting or waiting, stop for one minute and ask quietly: what is aware of this room right now? 2. Do not look for an answer in words. Notice only that sounds, body and thoughts are all being known. 3. Before sleep, take a minute to recall one moment today when you were simply aware, before you named what you saw.
