Knowing That Binds

Shiva Sutras 1.2

Meaning · English

Knowing is bondage. The bond is nothing other than this narrow knowing itself.

Jnana is knowing, from the root jna, to know. Bandha is the bond, from bandh, to tie. The sutra sets them side by side with nothing between: knowing is the bond. It does not mean wisdom. It means the ordinary, narrow knowing of someone who takes the body and the mind for the whole of who they are, and who sees everything else as outside and apart. The atma, the self, is caitanya, a living awareness that is already full. Sutra 1.1 says so. If that is true, nothing from outside can chain it. Only a way of knowing can hide it, and that way of knowing is the bond. This is why the sutra belongs to the shambhava way, the way of Shiva himself. It names the knot directly and offers no steps, no breath work and no method. The shakta way works through the mind's own power, and the anava way through small practices. Those come later. Kshemaraja, in the Vimarshini, takes the knowing here to be limited, mind-bound knowing that covers the self's fullness and keeps the round of birth turning. Bhaskara's Varttika adds a point of its own: the bond is the self's own making, shown by its own free will, and not laid on it by anyone else.

Someone wears tinted glasses so long they forget them. The whole world looks yellow, and they take that for the world's colour. The tint is the narrow knowing. The glasses are the body and mind taken as the self. The seeing itself was never tinted.

1. Once today, at a quiet moment, say the words "I am" inwardly and notice what you attach to them: a name, a job, a tired body, a mood. 2. Later, when you say "I am angry" or "I am slow," pause for a breath. Notice that something in you is watching that state. 3. In the evening, spend two minutes sitting still and noticing that knowing is going on, before any label arrives. Only notice. Do not try to reach anything.
