Body Made of Parts
Shiva Sutras 1.3
Meaning · English
The womb of the group is the body of the parts.
Four words, taken one at a time. Yoni is the womb, the place something comes from. Varga is a group, a set of things of one kind. Kala is a small portion, a limited share of power and knowing. Sharira is the body, what is put together and carries a person about. Read together, the sutra says that the source of the group is the body made of kalas. The Shiva Sutras teach that the self is consciousness (1.1) and that a limited way of knowing is the bond (1.2). Here Shiva shows how that limiting is built. The one consciousness shows itself as a body of small parts, each able to do or know only a little. The parts form a group, and the group takes the place of the whole. This belongs to shambhava, the way of Shiva himself. Shiva states it directly, as something to see, and sets out no steps toward it. Bhaskara's Varttika reads the womb as maya, the power by which difference appears. He reads the group as everything that comes from it, from the kala down to earth. The commentators agree that the sutra describes how limitation is put together, and does not condemn the body.
A jigsaw puzzle is cut from one board. Each piece is small and fits only its own place. Handled one at a time, the pieces seem to be all there is. The board is the source, the loose pieces are the kalas, and the boxed puzzle is the body.
1. Once today, at a quiet moment, sit for two minutes and list what you call "me": a body, a job, a mood, a name. 2. Beside each item, notice how small a share of ability it holds. Hands lift a little. Memory holds a little. 3. Before sleep, recall one moment when you took one piece for the whole of you. Only notice it.
