Letters Beneath Every Thought

Shiva Sutras 1.4

Meaning · English

The seat of knowing is the Mother of letters.

Three words carry this sutra. Jnana is knowing, the ordinary kind: this is a cup, I am tired, he is angry. Adhisthana is a standing-place, the thing something rests on. Matrika means the little mother, the mother of letters. It is the whole run of sounds from the first letter to the last, taken as a living source and not as a list. So the sutra says that knowing stands on the mother of letters. Every piece of knowing comes to us in words, and words are made of letters. Bhaskara's Varttika says there is hardly a thought in the world that is not threaded through with word. The sutra before it, 1.2, said knowing is the bond. Now the text shows where that bond stands. It belongs to the shambhava way, the first of three, followed by the shakta and anava ways. Shambhava points straight at the source and offers no method. Naming the ground is the teaching. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes the sutra to say that the mother of letters, unnoticed, is the ground of the knowing that ties us. Bhaskara adds more detail. A thought like 'I am lacking' or 'I am full' rises with words attached, and sorrow and joy follow from it.

Actors move across a stage and you follow the play. You rarely look at the boards under their feet, yet no step could be taken without them. Knowing is the play, and the letters are the boards. Every thought is walked out on them, and we notice only the story.

1. Tonight, sit quietly for two minutes with the lights low. 2. Let a thought come, then check whether it arrived as words, even faint ones. 3. Once today, when you feel tired or pleased, catch the sentence in your head that begins 'I am...'. 4. Only notice. You are not trying to stop the words or change them.
