The person exists: because composites serve another, because there must be the opposite of what has the three strands, because there must be a guide, because there is an experiencer, and because there is striving toward aloneness.

The question is whether anything in us is not matter. Samkhya holds that there is: purusha, pure awareness, separate from prakriti, the material source of body and mind alike. Five reasons are given. First, composites exist for someone else. Gaudapada's example is a bed. Its frame, legs, mattress and pillow do nothing for one another; the whole points to a sleeper. Body and mind are such a composite. Second, prakriti is made of three gunas, strands of clarity, motion and inertia, and it is unconscious and undiscriminating. Something with the opposite features must exist. Third, unconscious matter needs a guide, as a chariot needs its driver. Fourth, there must be an experiencer. Gaudapada notes that a meal of six tastes is enjoyed by someone, not by the food. Fifth, people strive for kaivalya, aloneness, meaning release from the round of rebirth. That goal cannot belong to matter, so someone must hold it. The conclusion is that a seer exists, distinct from the body.

Picture a cinema running at full tilt. The projector hums, the film threads through, the speakers fill the hall and the screen is lit. Every part serves the others, yet none of them watches the film. The whole setup makes sense only because there is a seat for a viewer. Samkhya reads body and mind the same way: an elaborate show staged for a watcher who is not part of the machinery.

This sits squarely in the mind-body problem. The main positions are physicalism, where mind is what brains do; dualism, where mind and matter are distinct; idealism; and panpsychism. Samkhya is an unusual dualism. Thought, ego and intellect fall on the matter side, and only bare awareness stands apart. That makes it closer to today's hard problem of consciousness than to Descartes. The argument from the experiencer echoes a live worry: why any processing is felt at all. Other reasons fare less well. Evolution shows how complex organization arises without anyone it is for. The fact that people long for release does not show that release, or a self to be released, exists. Whether subjective experience can be fully explained in physical terms remains genuinely open.
