The celestials came to Vishnu in fear. They called him lord of the world, the supreme spirit, and said they had come for refuge. The boy Dhruva, son of Uttanapada, was practicing such austerities that he was growing in power day by day, the way the moon grows toward full. They did not know what he was reaching for. Perhaps the throne of Sakra, or the sun, or the lord of wealth, or Varuna, lord of the waters. "Be kind to us," they said. "Pull this mace of affliction out of our chests, and make the son of Uttanapada stop his austerities." They were afraid, and they said so plainly. Vishnu listened, and he did not share their fear.
Vishnu answered them calmly. The boy wanted none of it, he said. Not Indra's throne, not the sun's realm, not the deep, not the rank of the lord of riches. "I will soon give him what he desires. Put your worry aside and go back to your own places. I will turn that boy from his austerity, though his mind is wholly absorbed in meditation." So the celestials, led by Indra, the performer of a hundred sacrifices, bowed and went home. Then the Great God, who is all things, took a form with four arms and went to Dhruva. "May good come to you, son of Uttanapada," he said. "I am pleased with your austerities. Ask for a boon, you of firm vows. You turned your mind from everything outside and gave it to me alone."
Dhruva opened his eyes. There stood Hari, the very one he had seen in meditation, holding the conch, the discus, the mace, the bow and the sword, a crown on his head. Dhruva bowed his head to the ground. His hair stood on end and he shook with fear. He wanted to praise the god, but he was only a boy, and he did not know what to say or how to begin. He was deeply troubled, and at last he simply turned to the god himself for help. "If you are pleased with me, give me this boon: let me praise you whenever I wish. I am a child. Even Brahma and the sages who know the Vedas have not fully known you. My heart is full of devotion. Give me the understanding to lay my praise at your feet."
Then Govinda touched the boy's cheek with the tip of his conch. Dhruva stood with his palms joined, and speech came to him. Bending low, he praised the one who never decays. He bowed to the one whose forms are earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind and intellect, and who is also beyond all of them, pure, subtle and present everywhere. "You have a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, a thousand feet," he said. "You are whatever has been and whatever will be. Sacrifice comes from you, and the oblations, the curds and the ghee, the animals tame and wild. The Rig Veda, the Sama Veda and the Yajur Veda sprang from you. Brahmanas came from your mouth, warriors from your arms, Vaisyas from your thighs, Sudras from your feet."
Dhruva went on. "From your eyes came the sun, from your mind the moon, from your mouth the fire, from your navel the sky. The heavens came from your head, the directions from your ears, the earth from your feet. As a huge Nyagrodha tree sits inside a tiny seed, so at the end of the world everything rests in you as its seed, and as the tree spreads from the seed, creation spreads from you. As a plantain trunk shows nothing but layers of bark and leaf, so in you nothing is seen except the universe. You are free of every quality, and pleasure and pain do not touch you. You are the soul of all things and the origin of all things. You sit in every heart, so what can I tell you that you do not know? Satisfy my desire, lord. My austerities have borne fruit today, because I have seen you."
The Lord said that Dhruva's devotion had indeed borne fruit. "The sight of me never goes without result. Ask for whatever you wish. When I appear before people, all their desires are fulfilled." Dhruva answered, "You live in the hearts of all, so how could you not know what I carry in my mind? Still, I will say it, though it is hard to reach. If you are pleased, what could be out of reach? It was by your favor that Indra came to rule the three worlds. My stepmother said to me, loudly, 'This royal throne is not for you, since you were not born from me.' So by your favor I ask for a high place, above all others, one that holds up the universe and lasts forever."
The Lord said Dhruva would certainly have the place he asked for. In a former birth, he told him, Dhruva had pleased him. He had been a Brahmin, devoted with all his heart, dutiful to his parents and faithful in his duties. A prince became his friend, handsome and given to every pleasure. Seeing the prince's riches, the Brahmin wished to be born the son of a king, and that wish was why he was now born in Uttanapada's house, in the line of Swambhuva. "Others count that a great boon," said the Lord, "and you asked it of me, but now you do not value it so much. Anyone who worships me is soon freed from rebirth. What is the heaven of the gods to someone whose mind rests in me?"
"By my favor," the Lord said, "you will reach a place above the three worlds and become the support of the stars and planets. There is no doubt of it. I give you a station above the sun, the moon, the stars, Mercury, Venus, Saturn and all the constellations, above the region of the seven Rishis and the gods who move through the air. Some gods live four ages, some the reign of one Manu, but you will live for a whole Kalpa. Your mother, Sunoti, will become a clear star and stay in the sky beside you for that same time. And people who sing your glory with steady minds, morning and evening, will grow in virtue." Parasara said that Dhruva received this boon from Janarddana and took up that high station.
Usanas, the teacher of the gods and the Asuras, watched Dhruva's honor and glory grow, and he spoke these verses. "How great is the power of his austerity, and how great its fruit, when even the seven Rishis are placed behind him. And here is his mother Suniti, also called Sunrita. Who on earth can tell her glory? She gave birth to Dhruva, and so she has reached a place that is a refuge for the three worlds, higher than any other." Whoever tells how Dhruva was raised to that heavenly place will be freed from sin and honored in heaven. He will not lose his place in this world or the next, and he will live long, blessed in every way.
