Parasara said to Maitreya: the prince had heard the sages' words from beginning to end. He bowed to them and walked out of the thicket, sure now that his purpose would be fulfilled. His name was Dhruva, and he was five years old. He went to a holy place on the bank of the Yamuna called Madhuvana, the grove of Madhu, named for a demon who once lived there. Later Satrughna, the youngest son of Dasaratha, killed the demon's powerful son Lavana and founded a city on that ground, which was named Mathura. In that place, a shrine that cleanses all sin, where Mahadeva himself had meditated on Hari, Dhruva began his penance.
He followed the instruction Marichi and the others had given him. He sat and contemplated Vishnu, sovereign of the gods, as present within himself. He drew his mind away from every other thought. And as he held to this alone, the Great Hari, who dwells in all creatures and all things, took possession of his heart. With Vishnu living in the boy's heart, the earth could no longer bear his weight. When Dhruva stood on his left foot, half the earth sank beneath him. When he stood on his right, the other half sank. When he stood on his toes, the whole earth shook, with all its mountains and rivers. The seas were thrown into turmoil.
The celestials called Yamas were badly frightened. They met with Indra and began to plan how to break the boy's devotion. The Kushmandas joined Indra, took on many shapes, and set about disturbing his meditation. First came a figure that looked exactly like his mother, Suniti. She stood before him in tears and spoke softly: "My son, stop this penance. It is ruining your health. I won through great hardship to have you, and all my hopes are in you. Do not leave me helpless and alone because of my rival's words. You are my only refuge, and you are only five years old."
The false Suniti went on: "Such hard penance does not suit you. There is a time for play, then a time for study, then a time for worldly life, and only last the time for austerity. You are a child. This is the season for play. Why destroy yourself? Your first duty now is to me. Do what fits your age. If you do not give this up today, I will end my life in front of you." But Dhruva was wholly bent on seeing Vishnu. He did not even notice his mother weeping, her eyes red and blurred. Then the figure cried, "Child, run. Terrible Rakshasas with raised weapons are coming through the forest." And she vanished.
At once the Rakshasas crowded in, weapons raised, their faces spitting flame. They screamed at him and whirled their weapons. Hundreds of jackals howled, fire pouring from their open mouths. The night-rangers shouted, "Kill him, kill him, tear him to pieces, eat him." Goblins with the faces of lions, camels and crocodiles howled around him to strike terror into his heart. None of it touched him. His mind was entirely given to Govinda. He saw Vishnu seated within himself, and he saw nothing else. Every illusion failed, and the celestials were deeply troubled. Afraid, and tormented by the boy's austerities, they gathered and went together to Hari, creator of the universe, who has no beginning and no end, to ask his help.
