The story · English
Seven sages met the boy Dhruva, and they spoke to him gently. "You cannot be troubled by worry, for your father is the king. And we cannot think you are grieving for someone you love and have lost. We see no sign of illness on your body either. So what is it that leaves you so unsettled? Tell us, if you know yourself." Parasara, who tells this story, says that Dhruva answered them. He did not hold back. He repeated to the sages exactly what Suruchi, his father's other wife, had said to him. The sages listened to every word. Then they turned to one another and spoke of what kind of boy this was.
"Look at the force of a Kshatriya's nature," the sages said among themselves. "He is only a child, yet he cannot bear to be treated with contempt. What his stepmother said has not left his mind." Then they turned back to him. "Son of a Kshatriya, if you are willing, tell us what you want to do, since the world has left you dissatisfied. You have great strength in you. Tell us where you want our help. Speak freely, because we can see that there is something you want from us." This was an open door, and Dhruva walked through it. He did not ask for riches, and he did not ask for a kingdom. What he asked for was far larger than either.
"Foremost of the twice-born," Dhruva said, "I do not want riches, and I do not long for a kingdom. I want a station that no one has ever reached before. Tell me how to win it, the highest place there is in this world." The sages answered one at a time. Marichi said, "Prince, no one reaches that best of stations without pleasing Govinda. Worship the one who never decays." Atri said, "When Janarddana, the first of spirits, is pleased with someone, that person gains the imperishable dignity. I tell you the truth." Angira said, "If you want an exalted station, worship Govinda, in whom everything that exists rests, and who does not change or decay."
Pulastya said, "Worship Hari, the Supreme Soul and Supreme Brahma, and you may gain eternal liberation. Then how much easier to reach that high station." Kratu said, "Nothing is hard to win when Janarddana is pleased. He is the soul of every sacrifice and the highest spirit in deep contemplation." Pulaha said, "Honor Vishnu, good boy, the lord of sacrifice and of the universe. By worshipping him, Indra became king of the gods." Vasishtha said, "Whatever a person wants in this world can be gained by adoring Vishnu. So how much more this high place." Dhruva bowed and said, "You have told me whom to worship. Now tell me the prayer I should meditate on to please him. Great ascetics, be pleased to teach it to me."
The sages answered, "Prince, listen. We will tell you how those devoted to Vishnu worship him. First they pull the mind back from everything outside. Then they hold it steady on the one in whom the world exists. "Now hear the prayer for one who has gathered his thoughts on that single object, whose heart is full of Him, and who has mastered himself. It is this: 'Om, salutation to Vasudeva, who shows himself as Brahma, Vishnu and Siva, and whose form cannot be fathomed.' "Long ago your grandfather, the Manu Swayambhuva, offered this prayer. Janarddana was pleased and gave him the prosperity he wanted, which no one in the three worlds could match. So try to please Govinda by reciting this prayer again and again."
