Parasara said that Menu Swayambhava had two good and brave sons, Priyavrata and Uttanapada. Uttanapada had two queens. His favourite was Suruchi, and her son was Uttama, whom the king loved dearly. His other queen was Suniti, to whom he was less attached. Her son was Dhruva. One day the king sat on his throne with Uttama on his lap. Dhruva saw his brother there and wanted the same place. He came up gladly, wishing to be lifted onto his father's knee. But Suruchi was standing nearby, and the king did not dare to take the boy in.

Suruchi saw the child of her rival, eager to climb up where her own son already sat. She spoke to him plainly. "Child, why do you cherish a hope you have no right to? You were born of another mother, and you are no son of mine. That place is fit for Uttama. Yes, you are the king's son, but I did not give birth to you. This throne is for my son only. Why do you long for it as if you were mine? Don't you know you are Suniti's child?" Dhruva heard her, left his father, and went to his mother's rooms in a rage. His lips were trembling.

Suniti took him onto her lap. "Child, who has made you angry? Who has failed to welcome you? Whoever treats you badly has offended your father." Dhruva told her everything Suruchi had said before the king. Suniti sighed, and her eyes dimmed with grief. "Suruchi spoke the truth. Your fortune is a hard one, my son. Those born lucky are not insulted by stepmothers. Still, do not despair. No one can erase what you did before, or give you what you left undone. Thrones, umbrellas of royalty, horses and elephants belong to those whose merit has earned them. The king favours Suruchi because of her merit in a past life. I am a wife in name only."

Suniti went on. "Her son was born as Uttama from stored-up goodness. You, Dhruva, are my son, with less of it. Do not grieve. A wise person is content with the place that is theirs. If Suruchi's words hurt you, gather merit, which brings every good. Be kind, upright, friendly, and devoted to the good of all living things. Prosperity flows to worthy people as water flows to low ground." Dhruva answered, "Mother, your comfort does not reach my heart. Harsh words have torn it open. I will work until I reach the highest rank, one the whole world adores. I am not Suruchi's son, but I am yours, and you raised me. Watch what I can do. Let Uttama have the throne my father gave him.

"I do not want what others hand to me, Mother. By my own actions I will win a place not even my father has held." Having said this, Dhruva left his mother's house. He went out of the city and into a nearby thicket. There he saw seven ascetics sitting on kusa grass, on black antelope hides they had taken off and spread out. He greeted them respectfully and bowed low. "Great ascetics, do you know me? I am Uttanapada's son, born of Suniti. I am dissatisfied with the world, and so I have come before you." The sages replied, "Prince, you are only a boy, four or five years old. You have no reason to be dissatisfied with life."
