The Upsurge of Awareness
Shiva Sutras 1.5
Meaning · English
A sudden rising up: that very upsurge is Bhairava, the Lord.
Three words carry the sutra. Udyama is the upsurge. Its root is the sense of lifting or rising up, as when something leaps into view all at once. Bhairava is a name of Shiva, the Lord who holds all things within himself and lacks nothing. Shambhava is the first of the three ways, the one with no steps and no means, where freedom is met directly. Taken word by word, the sutra says that the upsurge is Bhairava. It does not say the upsurge leads to him or resembles him. The two are the same. The sutras before it teach that awareness is the self and that narrow knowing is the bond. This one shows where the bond loosens: in the instant awareness rises up and is felt as itself, before it settles on any object. That is why it belongs to the shambhava way. Nothing is built or practised to reach it. It is recognised when it happens. Kshemaraja, in the Vimarshini, takes the upsurge as the self's own awareness stirring freely, and that stirring as Bhairava. Bhaskara's Varttika stresses how quick it is, a flash, and calls it a fullness of the feeling of I that takes in every divided thought.
1. Sit or stand wherever you are, with eyes open or closed, and do nothing in particular. 2. Wait for the moment when you suddenly notice, a small flash of being aware. 3. Stay with that rising itself, not with what you noticed. 4. When the mind runs off after a thought, notice the instant you realise it has wandered. That is the same rising. Rest there. 5. Stop when the time you set has passed, or when the flash has gone and you are only thinking.
