The Fourth Among Three States

Shiva Sutras 1.7

Meaning · English

Within the divisions of waking, dream and deep sleep, the fourth spreads out fully.

Three words name the states an ordinary day passes through. Jagrat is waking, when the world is held steady by the senses. Svapna is dream, when the mind makes its own scenes. Sushupti is deep sleep, when nothing appears at all. Bheda means the divisions between them, the way each one is cut off from the others. Turya means the fourth. It is the knowing that was present in all three, though none of them noticed it. Abhoga is the full spreading out, the way a taste fills the mouth. Sambhava is the arising, the coming to be. So the sutra says that in the very middle of the three divided states, the fourth arises and fills. It does not say the fourth is somewhere else. The word for the divisions is the same place where the arising happens. Shiva teaches this after the sutras on the upsurge and on the drawing in of the powers, because the upsurge has to be found in something the student already lives through. That is why it belongs to shambhava, the way that needs no steps and no tool, only a sudden recognition. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes the fourth to run through the three states as their ground, rather than being a fourth place apart. The commentators agree on this.

1. Lie down at night and let the body be still. 2. Watch the day's waking fade. Attend to the place where waking turns into dream, or into sleep. 3. Hold your attention on that join, not on any picture or thought in it. 4. When the mind wanders into a story, come back to the join. 5. Do the same when you wake in the morning, on the way from sleep into the day. 6. Stop when sleep takes you.
