जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर। जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर॥
Meaning · English
Victory to Hanuman, ocean of knowledge and virtue. Victory to the lord of the monkeys, who lights up the three worlds.
Jay is a cry of praise: may he win, may he be honoured. Gyan is knowledge and gun is good qualities. Hanuman holds so much of both that Tulsidas calls him an ocean of them. Kapis joins two words, monkey and lord, so it means the foremost of the monkeys. The three worlds are heaven, earth and the world below, and his fame shines in all of them. Valmiki shows that learning: when Hanuman first speaks to Rama, Rama notes he made not one slip in his speech.
Picture an oil lamp set on the threshold of a village house at dusk. One small flame lights the room behind it, the step it sits on, and a stretch of the lane outside. Hanuman's renown works the same way. It is one presence, and heaven, earth and the world below are all lit by it.

ज्ञान और गुण के सागर हनुमान की जय हो। तीनों लोकों को उजाला देने वाले वानरों के स्वामी की जय हो।
जय स्तुति की पुकार है: वह विजयी हो, उसका सम्मान हो। ज्ञान का अर्थ है जानना-समझना और गुण का अर्थ है अच्छी विशेषताएँ। हनुमान में ये दोनों इतने भरे हैं कि तुलसीदास उन्हें इनका सागर कहते हैं। कपीस दो शब्दों को जोड़ता है, वानर और स्वामी, इसलिए इसका अर्थ है वानरों में सबसे अग्रणी। तीनों लोक हैं स्वर्ग, पृथ्वी और पाताल, और उनकी कीर्ति इन सबमें चमकती है। वाल्मीकि उस विद्या को दिखाते हैं: जब हनुमान पहली बार राम से बोलते हैं, तो राम ध्यान देते हैं कि उनकी वाणी में एक भी चूक नहीं हुई।
साँझ के समय गाँव के किसी घर की देहरी पर रखे तेल के दीये की कल्पना कीजिए। एक छोटी-सी लौ अपने पीछे के कमरे को, जिस पैड़ी पर दीया रखा है उसे, और बाहर की गली के एक हिस्से को रोशन कर देती है। हनुमान की कीर्ति भी इसी तरह काम करती है। वह एक ही उपस्थिति है, और स्वर्ग, पृथ्वी और पाताल सब उसी से आलोकित हैं।
