Rama's Messenger, Wind's Son

Hanuman Chalisa 4

Meaning · English

Messenger of Rama, dwelling place of strength beyond measure, son of Anjani, known by the name Son of the Wind.

Each phrase is one of his names. Ram dut: Rama's messenger, the one Rama sent across the sea to find Sita, carrying Rama's ring. Valmiki and the Ramcharitmanas both tell this. Atulit bal dhama: a home where strength lives that no one can weigh. Anjani-putra: son of Anjani, his mother. Pavansut: son of Pavan, the wind. Valmiki tells that the wind fathered him through Anjani, wife of Kesari. The line names him first by his work for Rama, then by his strength, then by his birth.

Think of a deep village well. Families draw bucket after bucket all summer, and the water line barely drops. Nobody measures how much is down there. They simply know it will be there tomorrow. That is strength beyond measure with a home: not a fixed amount that runs out, but a source Rama could draw on again and again.
