Thunderbolt Body, Good Sense

Hanuman Chalisa 5

Meaning · English

Great hero, mighty in valour, with a body hard as the thunderbolt: you clear away bad sense and keep company with good sense.

Three names for strength come first. Mahabir is the great hero. Bikram is valour, the daring to act. Bajrangi means one whose limbs are like the thunderbolt, the hardest thing in the old stories. Valmiki's Ramayana tells how the infant Hanuman leapt at the sun, was struck by Indra's thunderbolt, and was then blessed so no weapon could harm him. The second half turns inward. He drives out kumati, twisted thinking, and stays beside sumati, sound judgment.

Think of a gardener at the edge of a vegetable bed, one hand pulling weeds out by the root, the other holding a young tomato plant steady against its stake. Both jobs need strong hands. Hanuman's strength works the same way on a mind: it uproots the crooked thought and stays beside the sound one until it can stand.
