Golden Hue, Curling Hair
Hanuman Chalisa 6
Meaning · English
Golden is your colour, and you shine, finely dressed; rings hang at your ears, and your hair falls in curls.
This is a portrait, line by line. His colour is gold. He sits resplendent, and his clothes are good ones. He is not drawn as a rough creature of the forest but as someone handsome and composed. Rings hang from his ears. His hair curls. The gold has a story behind it. In the Ramcharitmanas, when Hanuman grows large before Sita in the Ashoka grove, Tulsidas describes his body as a mountain of gold. This line keeps that colour and adds the earrings and the curls.
Picture a village wrestler on the morning of his sister's wedding. The same heavy shoulders from the pit are now in a clean kurta, his hair oiled and curling, small gold rings in his ears. That is the picture here. The strength named before is unchanged, and now it is seen bright and well dressed.
