Lover of the Lord's Story

Hanuman Chalisa 10

Meaning · English

You take delight in hearing the Lord's deeds; Rama, Lakshmana and Sita make their home in your heart.

Two pictures of Hanuman sit side by side. First, he is a rasiya, someone who savours a thing the way one savours a good taste. What he savours is hearing the Lord's deeds told again. Second, Rama, Lakshmana and Sita live in his mind and heart, not as guests but as residents. In Valmiki's Uttara Kanda, when Rama prepares to leave the world, Hanuman asks to remain on earth as long as Rama's story is told. That is the listener this line describes.

Think of a grandmother who has heard the same family story many times and still leans in when someone starts telling it, mouthing the words before they come. The story is not news to her; the people in it are her own. Hanuman hears Rama's deeds that way, because the ones they are about already live with him.
