Learned, Skilled, Eager to Serve
Hanuman Chalisa 9
Meaning · English
Learned, rich in good qualities, exceedingly clever, you are always eager to carry out Rama's work.
Bidyavan: he has learning. Guni: he has good qualities and real skills to go with it. Ati chatur: very clever, quick to see what a moment needs. Then the line turns. All of this points at one thing, ram kaj, the work Rama needs done, and he is atur to do it, restless until it is finished. In the Ramcharitmanas, when the mountain Mainaka rises from the ocean and offers him rest, Hanuman says he cannot rest until Rama's work is done.
A sprinter crouched at the starting blocks: years of training in the legs, every muscle set, eyes on the lane ahead, waiting only for the signal. The training is his learning and skill. The forward lean is atur. Hanuman's gifts are not kept on a shelf for display. They are already set toward Rama's task.
