What Grammar Cannot Save

Bhaja Govindam 1

भजगोविन्दं भजगोविन्दं गोविन्दं भजमूढमते । संप्राप्ते सन्निहिते काले नहि नहि रक्षति डुकृञ्करणे

Meaning · English

Worship Govinda, worship Govinda, worship Govinda, foolish mind. When your time arrives and stands close, no, no, the grammar rule on your lips will not save you.

Govinda is a name of Krishna, the one who tends the cows, and the call to worship him comes three times. The listener is called a foolish mind. That means a mind pointed the wrong way, not a dull one. The time that arrives is death, and one word covers both. The grammar line quoted is an entry from a school list of verb roots, the one for 'to do'. Getting it exactly right is a skill for living. When the end stands close, that skill protects nobody. The no is said twice.

Leftover coins sit in a drawer after a trip abroad. Each one is real money, counted carefully, and over there it bought lunch. The corner shop at home will not take them. The recited grammar rule is money of that kind: it has real value and took effort to earn, but it only spends on this side of the border that death draws.
