The Thirst for More
Bhaja Govindam 2
Meaning · English
Fool, drop the thirst to pile up wealth. Keep a clear understanding in your mind, free of craving. Whatever your own work brings you, let that keep your mind glad.
The trouble is thirst, not money. Wealth itself is left alone. What has to go is the wanting that keeps reaching for the next gain. In its place comes a clear understanding, a mind that has stopped craving. Then comes a plain measure: whatever your own work brings in is yours to live on, and that is enough to keep the mind glad. The word for glad is light, almost playful, as if being content were a pleasure rather than a sacrifice.
At a wedding feast, a man keeps drifting back to the serving table to see which dish comes out next, while the full plate in his hand goes cold. There was always enough food. The plate is what his own work has already brought him; the thirst for more is the walk back to the table.
