Only Flesh and Fat
Bhaja Govindam 3
Meaning · English
Seeing a woman's full breasts and navel, do not be swept into infatuation. That is flesh and fat, changed in form; reflect on it again and again.
Shankara names the pull of a woman's body plainly, then answers it with a plain fact. What draws the eye is flesh and fat, shaped for a while and already changing. He does not warn against the seeing. He warns against being taken over by infatuation, entered by it as if possessed. The answer is not a single decision. It is to turn this fact over in the mind again and again, so it is there each time the pull returns.
A boy on his first day in a sweet shop stares at the trays of glistening jalebi. The man who has fried them for twenty years barely looks up. He knows them as flour, sugar and oil. Repeating 'flesh and fat' to oneself is meant to make a person the man at the fryer, not the boy at the counter.
