नलिनीदलगत जलमतितरलं तद्वज्जीवितमतिशयचपलम् । विद्धि व्याध्यभिमानग्रस्तं लोकं शोकहतं च समस्तम्

Meaning · English

Water on a lotus leaf never keeps still; life is just as unsteady. Know the whole world is seized by sickness and pride, and struck by grief.

A lotus leaf is waxy, so water never soaks in. It sits on top as a bead and rolls at the smallest breath of wind. Life sits the same way, only more restless. Then the view widens to everyone. The whole world is seized by two things, sickness in the body and pride in the self. The word for seized is the one used when an eclipse swallows the moon. On top of that, all of it is struck by grief.

A coin spun on a kitchen table seems, for a while, to stand on its edge by itself, steady and almost still. Nobody can say the second it will begin to wobble, and once it does, it lies flat within a breath. A life looks just as upright, with just as little holding it up.

कमल के पत्ते पर पड़ा पानी कभी स्थिर नहीं रहता; जीवन भी वैसा ही डगमग है। जान लो, सारा संसार रोग और अहंकार से ग्रस्त है, और शोक से आहत है।

कमल का पत्ता मोम-सा चिकना होता है, इसलिए पानी उसमें कभी नहीं समाता। वह ऊपर बूँद बनकर टिका रहता है और हवा की ज़रा-सी साँस से लुढ़क जाता है। जीवन भी उसी तरह टिका है, बस उससे भी अधिक चंचल। फिर दृष्टि फैलकर सब पर जाती है। सारा संसार दो चीज़ों से ग्रस्त है, तन में रोग और मन में अहंकार। 'ग्रस्त' वही शब्द है जो तब कहा जाता है जब ग्रहण चाँद को निगल लेता है। इस पर भी, यह सब शोक से आहत है।

रसोई की मेज़ पर घुमाया गया सिक्का कुछ देर तक अपने आप किनारे पर खड़ा लगता है, स्थिर और लगभग थमा हुआ। कोई नहीं बता सकता कि वह किस पल डगमगाने लगेगा, और एक बार डगमगाया तो एक साँस भर में सपाट गिर जाता है। जीवन भी उतना ही सीधा खड़ा दिखता है, और उसे टिकाए रखने वाला सहारा भी उतना ही कम है।
