When the Earning Stops

Bhaja Govindam 5

Meaning · English

While you are earning money, your own family stays fond of you. Later, living on in a worn-out body, no one at home even asks how you are.

While you are bringing money in, your own people are warm toward you. The word for that warmth also means dyed or coloured, which is to say attached, and attached to something. Then comes the later part of life. You are still alive, in a body gone brittle and cracked, sitting in the same house. Nobody asks you anything, not even the small news of the day. No one is called cruel. What is shown is where the warmth was fixed, and that it leaves when the earning does.

A village well draws a crowd every morning: buckets, talk, someone always waiting. When it runs dry, grass covers the path to it within a season. The well still stands where it always stood. People came for the water, and the questions at home followed the money in the same way.
