Bhaja Govindam 7

Meaning · English

The child clings to play, the young man to young women, the old man to worries. To the highest reality, no one at all clings.

The verse walks through one life in three stages and finds the same thing each time: the attention is already taken. The child is lost in games. The young man is lost in the woman he wants. The old man is lost in worry. One word carries all three, a word for clinging or being stuck to something. Then the last line turns: with all that clinging, not one person clings to the highest reality. No stage is empty. Each is simply full of something else.

Think of a single seat on a crowded bus. A schoolbag sits on it, then a shopping bag, then a heavy parcel, each put down the moment the last is lifted. The seat is never once empty. Attention works the same way: one hold is swapped for the next so quickly that the highest reality never gets the seat.
