काते कान्ता कस्ते पुत्रः संसारोऽयमतीव विचित्रः । कस्य त्वं कः कुत आयातः तत्त्वं चिन्तय तदिह भ्रातः
Meaning · English
Who is your wife, who your son? This worldly life is very strange. Whose are you, who are you, where did you come from? Brother, think on this truth here.
Wife and son are the nearest ties a person has, and the questions start there: who are they to you, really? Worldly life, the round of being born and dying, is called very strange, because everyone in it arrives from somewhere no one can name. Then the questions turn inward. Whose are you? Who are you? Where did you come from? The last line asks for thought about what is actually true, here, in this life, and it asks as a brother would, not a judge.
On a long train journey, strangers in one compartment share food, trade names, mind each other's bags, and by evening talk like family. At each station someone lifts a bag and steps off. The closeness was real, yet nobody asked where anyone had boarded. A household is that compartment: wife, son and self, travelling together for a stretch.

कौन तुम्हारी पत्नी है, कौन तुम्हारा पुत्र? यह संसार बहुत विचित्र है। तुम किसके हो, कौन हो, कहाँ से आए हो? भाई, यहीं इस सत्य पर विचार करो।
पत्नी और पुत्र मनुष्य के सबसे निकट के बंधन हैं, और प्रश्न वहीं से शुरू होते हैं: वे सचमुच तुम्हारे कौन हैं? सांसारिक जीवन, यानी जन्म और मृत्यु का यह चक्र, बहुत विचित्र कहा गया है, क्योंकि इसमें हर कोई ऐसी जगह से आता है जिसका नाम कोई नहीं बता सकता। फिर प्रश्न भीतर की ओर मुड़ते हैं। तुम किसके हो? तुम कौन हो? तुम कहाँ से आए हो? अंतिम पंक्ति यह सोचने को कहती है कि यहाँ, इसी जीवन में, वास्तव में सत्य क्या है, और वह ऐसे पूछती है जैसे कोई भाई पूछे, कोई न्यायाधीश नहीं।
किसी लंबी रेल यात्रा में एक ही डिब्बे के अजनबी आपस में खाना बाँटते हैं, एक-दूसरे को अपने नाम बताते हैं, एक-दूसरे के सामान का ध्यान रखते हैं, और शाम तक परिवार की तरह बातें करने लगते हैं। हर स्टेशन पर कोई अपना थैला उठाता है और उतर जाता है। वह अपनापन सच्चा था, फिर भी किसी ने नहीं पूछा कि कौन कहाँ से चढ़ा था। घर-गृहस्थी वही डिब्बा है: पत्नी, पुत्र और तुम स्वयं, कुछ दूर तक साथ-साथ यात्रा करते हुए।
