Four Steps from Good Company
Bhaja Govindam 9
Meaning · English
Good company brings detachment. Detachment brings freedom from delusion. Freedom from delusion brings a mind held steady on what is real, and that steadiness brings liberation while still alive.
There are four steps, and each one opens the next. The first is spending time with good people, people who live close to what is real. Around them, your grip on things slowly loosens. Once that grip loosens, the confusion it kept alive begins to lift. With the confusion gone, the mind stops lurching from one want to the next and rests on what does not change. A mind resting there is free now, in this life, not only at its end.
A jar of water scooped from a muddy puddle is brown and swirling. Set on a shelf where nothing knocks it, the silt sinks by itself until you can see clean through to the bottom. Good company is that quiet shelf. Nobody scrubs the water clear. It clears because it is left still.
