When the Water Is Gone
Bhaja Govindam 10
Meaning · English
Youth gone, where is desire's turmoil? Water dried, where is the lake? Wealth spent, where is the household? Truth known, where is the round of worldly life?
Each line pairs a thing with what keeps it going. Desire runs on the heat of youth; age cools it. A lake is only water held in a hollow; dry the water and a dip in the ground is left. The people crowding around a rich man are there for the money, and go when it goes. The last line turns the same rule on the whole churn of worldly life: it runs on not seeing what is real. Once that is seen, nothing is left to keep it turning.
A kite rides high only while the wind holds. When the wind drops, it sinks to the ground, and it turns out nothing in the paper or the string was keeping it up. Desire, the lake and the crowd are held up the same way, by something outside themselves, and they drop when it gives out.
