Pride in What Time Takes

Bhaja Govindam 11

Meaning · English

Take no pride in wealth, in your people, in youth; time takes everything in a blink. Knowing all this is illusion, leave it and enter the state of Brahman.

Three things people grow proud of: money, the people who gather around them, and a young body. The trouble is not the things but the pride, which treats them as fixed, when time can take all three in the blink of an eye. The word for time here also means death. Calling all of it illusion follows from that: it looks lasting and is not. What the hymn sets against it is Brahman, the one reality time has no hold on, and it asks the listener to enter that.

A guest in a fine hotel room starts calling it mine: moves the chairs, shows friends the view, takes pride in it. One morning the key card stops working, with no notice given. Wealth, company and a young body are held on that same kind of stay, and the pride was always in something lent.
