The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 1 · The Armies Assemble

Guard the Grandsire

Bhagavad Gita 1.11

Meaning · English

At all the strategic points, each of you standing in your assigned place, defend Grandsire Bheeshma, all of you, without exception.

Duryodhana speaks to Drona and the commanders, and every clause is an order. Take three words apart. Ayana means a way in, a passage or strategic point, so the army's entrances and weak spots. Bhaga means a share or portion, and yatha-bhagam means each man in his own share, his own assigned place. Abhirakshantu comes from raksh, to guard or protect, and the abhi in front gives it the sense of guarding closely, on every side. So the plain sense: stay at your posts at every point of the line, and all of you protect Bheeshma. The word eva, only, sharpens it: Bheeshma above all. The reason is Duryodhana's own, given in the verse before: he has just called his army's strength safely marshalled by Bheeshma. Everything rests on one old man, so he asks that the whole line be spent keeping him safe. That is his view in that moment, and the text does not offer it as wisdom. A reader can notice that the command comes from a leader who sounds sure but depends on one person. The classical commentators, Shankara, Ramanuja and Madhva, are not recorded as reading this verse differently from its plain sense; they treat it as Duryodhana's anxious instruction.

A shop-owner locks the front door, then tells every worker to stand around the one strongbox in the back room. The shelves, the street windows and the side lane are left unwatched, because all the worry has gathered on one box. Duryodhana's order has the same shape: one person carries the whole army's hope.

1. Tonight, think of one task or household matter that depends on a single person, perhaps you. 2. Write that person's name and the one thing that would go wrong if they were absent, in one line. 3. Notice, for a minute, whether the worry feels like care or like dread, and leave it at noticing. 4. Tomorrow, mention it once to someone else who shares that task.

A woman runs a small clinic's front desk, and this morning the senior doctor called in sick. She feels the whole day tilt, because patients trust him and everyone else seems to stand behind him. She tells the other staff to cover every door and keep him comfortable the moment he arrives. Her instruction is Duryodhana's in small. Step by step: the fear comes first, then a list of orders, then a feeling of control from giving them. What the verse shows is that an order can be a way of holding fear, and that the one giving it has just named the single person everything leans on. Ordinary experience confirms that a team built around one person feels strong on good days and brittle on the day that person is missing. The verse does not say whether Duryodhana's plan works, and it does not say that guarding a leader is wrong. It promises nothing about the day's outcome, and it does not ease the fear that produced the order.
