The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 1 · The Armies Assemble
Two Measures of Strength
Bhagavad Gita 1.10
Meaning · English
That strength of ours, safely marshalled by Grandsire Bheeshma, is unlimited. This strength of theirs, carefully marshalled by Bheem, is limited.
Duryodhana is speaking, and this is his own estimate, not the book's. Three words carry it. Paryapta means enough, something that can be measured and found to suffice. Aparyapta is its opposite: beyond measure, unlimited. Abhirakshita comes from raksha, to guard, and so means an army kept safe and held in order. He calls his own side unlimited and safely marshalled by Bheeshma, the grandsire. He calls the Pandava side limited and carefully marshalled by Bheem. The two guardians are set side by side: an old, honoured commander on his side, and on theirs a fierce brother who arranges their ranks. Duryodhana has just named his warriors for his teacher Drona, and now he sums up. A man facing a hard day often shrinks the enemy and enlarges himself, and he says it aloud, perhaps to steady himself as much as to inform Drona. Commentators have heard the tone differently. Ramanuja, among others, is cited as reading the key word as insufficient, so that Duryodhana's own fear shows through. Shankara's commentary on the Gita does not pause on these opening verses.
Two street-cricket captains pick sides, and one of them announces loudly that his team is unbeatable and the other lot are nothing. He has counted his best bat and judged the rival by its bowler. The loud tally is his hope, said as a fact. Duryodhana's sum of the armies works the same way.
1. Today, when you catch yourself sizing up a rival, a deadline or a difficult person, stop for a moment and notice the words you use. 2. Ask whether you are describing them as they are, or describing them smaller so the day feels safer. 3. Say the plain version once, silently, with no flourish, and notice whether the dread grows or settles.
A contractor sits in his van the night before the tenders are opened. He tells himself the other bidders are sloppy and his own figures are beyond challenge. His jaw is tight and he has checked the folder three times. The verse speaks to that moment. Duryodhana's boast is one man's estimate of two armies, and it is spoken at the edge of fear. Seen that way, the contractor can ask which of his claims are counted and which are only wished. He can write the real numbers down, and he can name the one rival he is actually afraid of. Then he can sleep, because nothing is left to be defended by exaggeration. Ordinary experience confirms that fear makes people round their own side up and the other side down. The verse does not promise that the tender will be won, that the fear will leave, or that careful counting changes what the other side holds. It also does not replace a doctor if the sleeplessness lasts.
