Counting Those Who Would Die

Bhagavad Gita 1.9

Meaning · English

Many other heroes besides, all armed with many kinds of weapons and all skilled in the art of war, stand ready to give up their lives for my sake.

Duryodhana has just named his chief generals. Now he widens the count: there are others, many of them, and all are heroes. A few words carry the weight. Shura is a hero, a brave fighter who does not flinch. Tyakta-jivita joins tyakta, given up or left behind, with jivita, life. He is saying these men have already let go of their lives. Visharada means expert, a master of a craft, and here the craft is war. So his claim has four parts: each man is brave, armed in many ways, trained, and willing to die. Then comes mat-arthe, for my sake. That phrase gives him away. He does not say for the kingdom or for duty. He says for me. The lines around it suggest why he lists all this: he is facing a rival army, and he seems to be reassuring himself as much as Drona. It is his view in that moment, not the book's teaching. Shankara's commentary does not take up this opening chapter. Ramanuja and Madhva, who do, read the passage as showing Duryodhana's state of mind rather than doctrine.

A boy about to face a quarrel at the school gate lists his friends aloud: the tall one, the one who boxes, the two who will not leave him. He counts them to feel safe. Duryodhana does the same with warriors, and the list shows what he wants to be true.

1. Next time you face something hard, such as a difficult talk or a big exam, notice the moment of dread before it starts. 2. In that moment, notice whether your mind begins counting what is on your side: people, money, preparation. 3. Spend one minute asking whether the counting is calming you or only covering a fear. 4. Write down in one line what the fear actually is.

A man sits the night before a hearing over his late father's land. He phones his cousins and asks each one: will you come with me tomorrow? Each yes loosens his chest a little. By the sixth call he is listing their strengths, one a policeman's son, another a man nobody argues with. Duryodhana does something close to this. The speech gives no account of the cause, only of who will stand with him and how well they fight. Seen that way, the counting is a way of handling dread, and the phrase 'for my sake' shows who the loyalty is meant to serve. In the man's night, the verse would make him notice that he has not yet said what he is afraid of. Ordinary experience confirms that a crowd can quiet a worry without answering it. The verse does not say whether the hearing will go well, and it does not make fear or loss any lighter.
