Meaning · English
Yourself, and Bheeshma, and Karna, and Kripa, victorious in battle; Ashvatthama, Vikarna, and the son of Somadatta as well.
Duryodhana is still listing the leaders of his own army for Drona, and he starts with Drona himself: "bhavan" is a respectful word for "you, sir". Placing his teacher at the head of the list is a courtesy, and it also reminds the old man whose side he is on. Then come Bheeshma, Karna and Kripa. Kripa carries the title "samitinjaya", from "samiti", a clash or assembly of fighters, and "jaya", victory: one who wins in battle. Ashvatthama is Drona's own son, and Vikarna is one of Duryodhana's brothers. "Saumadatti" means the son of Somadatta, the glossary's Bhurishrava. The closing words, "tatha eva cha", mean "thus, even so, and": the list is not finished. The reason is Duryodhana's own. He is anxious about the larger enemy army and wants to reassure himself, and to bind his commanders to him, by counting his strengths aloud. This is his view in that moment, not the book's teaching. It asks nothing of the listener yet. It shows a man who reaches for names, titles and numbers when he is afraid. The classical commentators, Shankara, Ramanuja and Madhva, are not recorded in this card as reading the line differently; they treat it as the opening of the story.
A host at a crowded wedding, nervous about whether enough guests will turn up, walks the hall reading names off a list to his elder uncle, pointing at each chair: this one is here, and this one, and this one. The list is not for the uncle. It is for the host, to steady himself. Duryodhana's roll call works the same way.
1. Next time you feel dread before a hard task, such as a difficult talk or an exam, stop for a minute and notice what you reach for first. 2. If you catch yourself listing reasons you will be fine, write them down on paper. 3. Read the list back and ask honestly whether it comforts you or only keeps the fear at a distance. 4. Do this once this week and simply notice. Nothing more is asked.
A shopkeeper opens the shutters on the morning the rent is due. The till is light. Before the first customer comes, he counts in his head: the regular who always pays on credit, the wholesaler who gave an extra week, his cousin who may lend something. He is not planning. He is calming himself with names. Duryodhana does the same with Drona: a long list is spoken to steady a shaking mind. Ordinary experience confirms that fear makes people count their allies out loud. For the shopkeeper, the same counting can do two things. It can show him honestly what help exists, and he can then ask each person plainly. Or it can only soothe him while the day's real arithmetic goes unfaced. The Gita tells this as the story of a man in Duryodhana's position, and offers no verdict yet. The limit is plain: a list of strong people does not make the rent appear, remove the worry or decide the outcome. It only shows how a frightened mind behaves, and what it chooses to say first.
