The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 1 · The Armies Assemble

Briefing the Teacher

Bhagavad Gita 1.7

Meaning · English

Now learn, best of the twice-born, who stand out among us, the leaders of my army. I recount them to you, so that you may be informed.

Three words carry the sense. Viśiṣṭa comes from a root meaning to set apart, so it means those who stand out from the rest. Nāyaka comes from the root for leading, so it means a leader or captain. Sañjñā-artha means for the sake of full knowing, that is, for information. Duryodhana has just spoken of the heroes he sees on the other side. Now he turns to his own, and the small word 'but' in the line marks the turn. He calls Drona the best of the twice-born, a courtesy to a Brahmin who is also his teacher. Then he says he will recount his leaders 'for information.' That is odd, because Drona has known these men for years. The words are Duryodhana's, not the book's teaching. A reader can hear a king reassuring himself aloud, and speaking to his teacher in the tone of a pupil who wants approval. The classical commentators, Shankara, Ramanuja and Madhva, build no doctrine on this line, and it serves as scene-setting. Nothing here asks anything of the reader beyond listening to how the opening of the Gita sounds: a man counting his strengths while the armies stand ready.

A team captain stands beside the coach just before the final and reads out the squad list, though the coach picked every player. The captain is not informing anyone. The reading steadies his own nerves. Duryodhana's recital to Drona works the same way.

1. Next time you face something that makes your stomach tighten, such as a meeting, a test or a hard conversation, notice whether you start listing your advantages in your head. 2. Say the list quietly, once, and notice who it is really for. 3. Notice what your voice does, whether it speeds up or goes flat. Just notice; no need to change it.

The night before her daughter's wedding, a mother sits with her brother and goes through the list of helpers again: who has the flowers, who meets the caterer, who drives the elders. He knows every name already. She goes through them anyway, and halfway down the list her shoulders drop. The verse puts Duryodhana in the same kind of moment. He recounts his leaders to a man who knows them, and the telling is partly for himself. Seen that way, the scene shows how a person under strain reaches for a count of what he has. Ordinary experience agrees that saying a list aloud to someone trusted can quiet a racing mind. The text offers this as Duryodhana's habit in a tense hour, and the Gita does not praise it as a method. It does not promise that the count will be enough. The wedding may still go wrong, and the battle in the story does not go his way. Nor does it replace a doctor when dread has become constant or hard to bear.
