Bhagavad Gita 1.6
Meaning · English
The son of Subhadra, and the sons of Draupadi, all of them indeed mahārathas, warriors each able to stand against ten thousand ordinary fighters.
Duryodhana is still counting the strength on the other side. Three words carry the verse. Saubhadra means the son of Subhadra, which points to Abhimanyu, a name the glossary does not spell out. Draupadeya means the sons of Draupadi, so the young sons of the Pandava household. Maharatha is maha, great, and ratha, chariot: a chariot-warrior who could single-handedly match ten thousand ordinary soldiers. The plain sense is that Duryodhana adds the younger men and calls every one of them, sarve eva, a maharatha. The reason is his own. He is speaking to his teacher Drona and wants him to see how formidable the opposing army is, so the list is Duryodhana's view in that moment, not the book's judgment of these men. Nothing here asks anything of the listener yet. It is a tally by an anxious man. The classical commentators Shankara, Ramanuja and Madhva do not read doctrine into this line; it belongs to the narrative that sets the scene.
A coach before a big match walks his captain along the opposing bench and reads out every name, including the newest players, calling each one dangerous. The list sounds like praise for the other side, but it shows how much weight the coach himself is carrying.
1. Today, notice one moment when you start listing everything that could go wrong before a hard task, such as a meeting, a call or an exam. 2. Say the list aloud or write it in a few lines, as Duryodhana does. 3. Look at it for a minute and notice whether it describes the task or your worry about it. Just notice; nothing needs fixing.
A father stands outside the hall where his daughter is taking her final exam. To calm himself he starts naming everyone he thinks is better prepared: the topper from her coaching class, the two cousins, even the quiet boy who sat at the back. Each name makes the others seem larger. Done step by step, the verse shows him what he is doing. Duryodhana lists even the youngest fighters of the other side as maharathas, and the text lets us see that this is a man speaking from unease, not simply measuring. The father could see the same thing in himself: the list is about his fear, not about the girl inside. Ordinary experience confirms that anxious people often exaggerate the strength of what they face. The verse does not promise that the result will be good, nor that the waiting will be easy. It only lets him recognise the counting for what it is.
