Meaning · English

Dhrishtaketu, Chekitan, and the heroic Kashiraj; Purujit, Kuntibhoj, and Shaibya, best of men; Yudhamanyu the courageous, and Uttamauja the gallant.

Duryodhana is still reading out the names of the fighters on the Pandava side to his teacher Drona. This is his list and his view in that moment, not the book's teaching. Three words carry it. Virya is strength, the force of a man who can act. The verse uses it twice, with vira in 'heroic' and 'gallant', so Duryodhana praises these men twice over for it. Nara-pungava means best of men, literally a bull among men, the one who leads the herd. Vikranta is the one who strides forward, courage that moves. Taken plainly, he is naming Dhrishtaketu, Chekitan, Kashiraj, Purujit, Kuntibhoj, Shaibya, Yudhamanyu and Uttamauja, and giving each a word of respect. The reason sits in the verses before it. He has just told Drona that the Pandava army is mighty and is led by Drona's own pupil. He does not mock these men. He measures them, and the respect he shows is the respect of someone who is uneasy. Listing the strong is how a worried man steadies himself. The verse asks nothing of the listener, because it is a speech inside a story. It shows a mind busy with the enemy's strength before the first arrow. Shankara, Ramanuja and Madhva build their teaching on later verses, so none of them gives a separate reading of this list.

A boy before a school final reads the other team's list aloud to his coach, adding a note beside each name: fast bowler, safe catcher, never gets out. The reading is half scouting and half nerves. Duryodhana's list does the same, naming the opposing fighters one by one while his worry shows.

1. Next time you face something hard, such as a difficult talk or an exam, notice whether your mind starts listing the strengths of the other side. 2. Write those items on paper in two minutes, then read them once. 3. Beside the list, write one thing you have already done to prepare. 4. Notice whether the list was information or only worry, and leave it at that.

A woman sits up the night before a property hearing, going over the other side's lawyers one by one: who is senior, who has won before, who will speak first. Her tea has gone cold. The verse shows the same habit in Duryodhana. Seen that way, she can ask whether her list is preparation or fear. The first can be written down and acted on, such as papers to check and questions to expect. The second only circles. She can write the names once, mark what she can act on, and put the rest aside for the night. She may then notice that counting the other side's strength felt like control but mostly raised her pulse. Ordinary experience agrees that a tired, anxious mind exaggerates what it fears. The verse does not promise that the list was wrong or that the hearing will go well. It does not calm the worry itself, and it does not replace advice from a lawyer or a doctor if the worry becomes constant. It only shows how a nervous mind behaves before a contest.
