Naming Heroes Among the Enemy
Bhagavad Gita 1.4
Meaning · English
Here stand powerful warriors, great bowmen, in battle the equals of Bheem and Arjun: Yuyudhan, Virat, and Drupad, each a warrior who alone could match the strength of ten thousand ordinary fighters.
Three words carry the verse. Shura means a hero, someone strong and unafraid. Maheshvasa joins maha (great), ishu (arrow) and asa (one who casts or draws): a great bowman. Maharatha means a great chariot-warrior, and the text defines it as one who can match ten thousand ordinary fighters alone. Duryodhana is now naming the fighters on the Pandava side. He says they are bowmen as good as Bheem and Arjun in battle, and he gives three names: Yuyudhan, Virat and Drupad. Why does he say it? He has just pointed out the Pandava army and its clever commander. Now he takes stock of what stands behind that commander. He uses the two best-known Pandava fighters as his measuring rods, which suggests whom he fears most. This is Duryodhana's reckoning, spoken to his teacher. It is not the book's teaching, and the book does not say these men are the greatest. The verse asks nothing of the listener. It shows a man counting the strength of those he faces. Shankara's commentary treats this opening chapter as scene-setting and begins the teaching with Arjuna's collapse. The classical commentators generally read this roll call as story, not doctrine.
A cricket captain walks the field before the match, reading the other team's sheet aloud to his coach. This one bats like a legend, that one bowls like another. He measures every stranger against the two names he already fears. Duryodhana does the same with his list of warriors.
1. Before a hard task this week, a difficult talk or a test, notice whether your mind starts counting the strengths of the other side. 2. Spend two minutes writing those strengths down, one line each. 3. Mark each line as either a fact you know or a fear you are adding. 4. Notice whether the list looks smaller on paper than it felt in your head.
A farmer's son sits with a lawyer the night before a land dispute is heard. Without being asked, he starts listing the other side's witnesses, who owns what, and who is related to the magistrate. Every name is said with a little more weight than the last. Counting rivals is a natural thing to do before a contest, and it can be useful. Naming each person turns a vague dread into a list that can be looked at. The verse shows a second thing in the same moment. The speaker picks the two strongest men he knows as his yardstick and holds everyone against them, so the list reveals his fear as much as it describes the other side. Seeing that, the farmer's son could separate what he knows about each witness from what he is only imagining, and could sleep on the facts. Ordinary experience bears this out: fear makes opponents look larger. The verse does not promise that the hearing will go well, and it does not make the dread go away. It only shows how a worried mind counts.
