Look at Their Clever Commander
Bhagavad Gita 1.3
Meaning · English
Behold, respected teacher, this mighty army of the sons of Pandu, arrayed in battle formation by your own intelligent disciple, the son of Drupad.
Duryodhana is speaking, and what follows is his view in that moment, not the book's teaching. He begins with a command: paśhya, behold. He wants Drona to look, and the word has an edge, as if to say, see what you have let happen. The second word is āchārya, a teacher, one who guides a student in conduct as well as skill. Duryodhana uses it to Drona with respect on the surface. The third is chamū, an army, here called mahatī, mighty. He admits the other side is large before he names anyone. Then comes the sting. The formation was arranged by Dhrishtadyumna, son of Drupad, whom he calls tava śhiṣhyeṇa, your disciple, and dhīmat, intelligent. Drona had taught this young man, though Drupad was Drona's old enemy and Dhrishtadyumna was born to bring about Drona's end. Duryodhana does not say this. He lets the facts sit. His reason is plain: he is uneasy, and he wants his teacher to feel the danger and the shame of it. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to watch a worried king press on an old wound while sounding polite.
A captain on a ship points out the rival crew's well-rigged boat to the old sailor who trained that very rigger, saying, look how neatly your pupil has done it. The praise is really a prod. Duryodhana's compliment works the same way: it sounds like admiration and aims at his teacher's pride.
1. Today, notice once when you praise someone and half-mean something else, such as a pointed 'nice work' to a colleague or relative. 2. Pause and ask yourself what you actually want from that person. 3. Say that want plainly, in one sentence, to them or on paper. 4. At day's end, note whether the plain version felt harder or easier than the hint.
A shopkeeper stands at his stall the morning a bigger store opens across the road. His assistant, once trained by him, now works there. He says to a friend, loudly, 'Have you seen how well organised they are, thanks to my own man?' He is not admiring anyone. He is anxious and wants his friend to feel it too. The verse shows this moment from inside Duryodhana. Step by step: fear arrives first, then it dresses itself as praise, then it aims at a person's loyalty or guilt. Seeing those steps lets a reader catch the dressing before it goes out of their mouth. Ordinary experience confirms that worry makes us blunt and sly at once. The limit is plain: seeing this in Duryodhana does not remove the rival store, the money fear, or the sting of an old pupil's success. It only shows how the fear is speaking.
