The Overseer's Own Doubt

Rig Veda 10.129.7

इयं विसृष्टिर्यत आबभूव यदि वा दधे यदि वा न। यो अस्याध्यक्षः परमे व्योमन्त्सो अङ्ग वेद यदि वा न वेद

Meaning · English

This creation, where it came from, whether it was founded or not: its overseer in the highest heaven surely knows, or perhaps he does not.

The word for creation pictures a letting-loose, a world sent out in many forms: mountains, rivers, seas. Where did it come from? Was it set in place by someone, or not? If anyone can answer, it is the one who watches over it from the highest heaven. He must know. Then the seer adds a last line that does not settle anything: or perhaps he does not. Sāyaṇa reads 'set in place' as 'holds it up', and takes the doubt to mean that if anyone holds the world, only this one could.

A huge old tree stands at the edge of a village, older than every house. Ask who planted it, and people point to the oldest woman, who has sat in its shade all her life. She is the one most likely to know. She may also shrug. The overseer is that elder, and the question stays with the tree.

यह सृष्टि कहाँ से आई, इसे किसी ने रचा या नहीं रचा: परम आकाश में बैठा इसका अध्यक्ष निश्चय ही जानता है, या शायद वह भी नहीं जानता।

सृष्टि के लिए जो शब्द है, वह खुला छोड़ देने का चित्र खींचता है, एक ऐसा संसार जो अनेक रूपों में बाहर भेजा गया: पर्वत, नदियाँ, सागर। यह कहाँ से आया? क्या किसी ने इसे स्थापित किया, या नहीं? यदि कोई उत्तर दे सकता है, तो वही जो परम आकाश से इस पर दृष्टि रखता है। उसे अवश्य पता होगा। फिर ऋषि एक अंतिम पंक्ति जोड़ते हैं जो कुछ भी तय नहीं करती: या शायद वह नहीं जानता। सायण 'स्थापित किया' का अर्थ 'थामे हुए है' लेते हैं, और इस संशय का आशय यह मानते हैं कि यदि कोई संसार को थामे है, तो केवल यही हो सकता है।

गाँव के छोर पर एक विशाल पुराना पेड़ खड़ा है, हर घर से पुराना। पूछो कि इसे किसने लगाया, तो लोग सबसे बूढ़ी स्त्री की ओर इशारा करते हैं, जो जीवन भर उसकी छाँव में बैठी है। सबसे अधिक संभावना उसी के जानने की है। वह कंधे भी उचका सकती है। अध्यक्ष वही वृद्धा है, और प्रश्न पेड़ के पास ही रह जाता है।
