Who truly knows, who here could say, from where it was born, from where this creation came? The gods came after its sending forth. So who knows from where it arose?
The seer asks twice where the world came from. Sāyaṇa hears two questions in that: out of what stuff it was made, and by what cause it was set going. Who knows this truly, from the inside, and who could tell it in full? The gods would seem the obvious ones to ask. But the gods appeared only after the world's elements were sent out, so the beginning lies before their own birth. If they cannot see back that far, no one else can either.
A child studies a photograph of her parents' wedding. She can name every face, but she cannot say how the day felt, because she was born years later. The gods stand where she stands before the world's beginning: they arrived after it, so it lies outside anything they could remember.
