The Cord Stretched Across
Rig Veda 10.129.5
Meaning · English
Their cord was stretched across. Was there a below? Was there an above? There were seed-bearers; there were great powers: self-power beneath, the reaching-forth beyond.
A line is drawn across the dark, and the first division appears. The poet asks whether anything lay beneath it or above it; the stretched vowels in the original mark open doubt. On either side something exists: seed-bearers that carry life forward, and great powers. Below lies a force that sustains itself, above an outward-reaching effort. Sāyaṇa reads the line as a ray spreading the new creation everywhere at once, the seed-bearers as living beings, the powers as the vast elements they live among, and the lower force as food.
A carpenter snaps a chalked string across a bare plank. Before that moment the board has no top half or bottom half; one taut line, and suddenly there are two sides. The hymn pictures the first distinction the same way: a single cord stretched across, and with it, for the first time, a below and an above.
