Desire, the First Seed
Rig Veda 10.129.4
Meaning · English
In the beginning desire arose, the first seed of mind. Seers, searching their hearts with wisdom, found the bond of what is in what is not.
Before anything took shape, the first stirring was desire: a wanting, a leaning toward something. It rose in mind, and it was the seed from which the rest would grow. The seers did not find this by looking outward. They turned into the heart and thought it through, and found that what exists is tied to what does not; the one hangs on the other. Sāyaṇa reads the desire as the Lord's wish to create, and the seed as deeds left ripening from an age before.
A potter sits before a lump of wet clay. Nothing on the wheel looks like a bowl yet, but she already wants one, and that wanting decides every movement of her hands. The bowl is tied to something not yet there. The verse puts that same wanting before the world, as the first move toward everything that follows.
