Born from Heat

Meaning · English
In the beginning darkness was hidden by darkness; all this was unmarked water. What lay covered by emptiness, that One, was born through the power of heat.
Before anything had a shape, there was dark wrapped in dark: no light, and nothing separate enough to be lit. 'Water' does not mean a sea. It means everything still run together, with no mark between one thing and the next. Over what was coming lay emptiness. Then, by heat, the same word used for the burning effort of a seer at prayer, the One was born. Sāyaṇa reads the darkness as the world already present but hidden in its cause, not as nothing.
A hen sits on an egg. Inside the shell it is dark, and the yolk and white show no wing or beak yet. Nothing is added from outside, only steady warmth, day after day, until a chick breaks out. The world before creation is the closed egg, and heat is what brings the one living thing out of it.
