The Windless Breath

Rig Veda 10.129.2

Meaning · English

There was no death then, nor deathlessness. Nothing marked night off from day. That One breathed, windless, by its own power. Nothing else existed beyond it.

Death and its opposite need each other. Where nothing lives, nothing dies, and nothing can be called undying, so both are denied. Night and day had nothing to tell them apart: no sun or moon, and so no hours, months or years. Time itself was absent. Still, something was. The One breathed, yet without air, sustained only by its own nature. Sāyaṇa reads 'windless' as a guard: 'breathed' says the One was present, not that it had lungs or a body. Nothing stood outside it.

Picture a coal buried in ash inside a shut stove. No draught reaches it and no flame shows, yet it keeps its glow by its own heat. The One was like that: alive without any air feeding it from outside, because there was no outside for air to come from.
