Meaning · English
Then there was neither being nor non-being, no world of air, no heaven above. What enclosed it, and where, in whose keeping? Were there waters, deep past sounding?
The seer reaches back before the world and finds that even 'is' and 'is not' fail. It was not empty nothing, since a world cannot grow from nothing; nor was it something in the way a stone or a river is. Then the layers fall away: the worlds below, the middle air, the heavens above. Only questions remain. What enclosed it, where, under whose care? Sāyaṇa hears the verb as covering; others hear stirring. Even the deep waters are asked about, not affirmed.
A concert hall in the moment before the first note. The music is not there yet, but the silence is not empty either; everyone is leaning toward the sound that will come out of it. The seer points to such a state: not yet a thing, and not nothing, the hush before the world begins.
